Carved out by the river for thousands of years, the volcanic rocks of the canyon reach up to 25-metres tall and 2 metres wide. Nestled between some of the most striking hamlets in Italy, the tiny village of Castelmola is home to approximately 1000 inhabitants and is perched on top of a sheer cliff overlooking the Ionian Sea, where the view takes the eyes from Taormina all the way to Calabria. Among its attractions you will find a medley of military and religious architecture, spanning from the Greek-Roman, Byzantine, Norman, Spanish and Bourbon eras to the present-day.

Also know as 'Mungibello', or beautiful mountain, this active 3.326-metre volcano is the highest in Europe. Declared a World Heritage Site in 2013, the landscape alternates between urban settlements, dense woodland and areas of volcanic rock. Here you can also find a number of mountain refuges, welcoming structures, activities and a space observatory.
